Can we have Bulk Billed IVF if my partner has had a vasectomy?

Yes, you can have Bulk Billed or Full Service IVF treatment at Life Fertility Clinic if your partner has had a vasectomy.

We can offer testicular sperm aspiration (TESA – to retrieve sperm) and help you achieve a pregnancy through IVF even if your partner has had a vasectomy.

Please note, there are additional costs for this procedure, it is not bulk billed.

You can find more detailed information about sperm retrieval procedures in this fact sheet.

Is everyone eligible for Bulk Billed IVF?

Age is the single biggest factor affecting a woman’s ability to achieve a pregnancy and have a healthy baby – either naturally or through IVF.

IVF Treatment through our Bulk Billed Program is therefore only available to women who are 45 years of age or younger (at the time of egg collection).

However, if you are over 45, you may be suitable for IVF treatment through our Full-Service Fertility Program.

Additionally our Bulk Bill IVF program has a BMI requirement and we will only treat patients who have a BMI under 41. We have no BMI restriction in our Full Service Program.

If you have a Medicare Card you are eligible for Medicare Rebates on your doctor consultations. However in order for you to be eligible for Medicare Rebates for IVF treatment (have your IVF treatment bulk billed), you will need to be diagnosed as medically infertile.

There are many factors which are assessed that can affect your fertility and may contribute to a diagnosis of medical infertility. Your Fertility Specialist or Fertility Doctor will assess your fertility with the help of diagnostics tests and a thorough medical history.

How much will my Fertility Tests Cost?

Depending on your medical history a variety of tests will be recommended for you and your partner (if relevant). These may include blood tests that will investigate:

  • Hormone levels (reproductive and thyroid function)
  • Infectious diseases (e.g. HIV, Hep B & C, rubella)
  • Chromosomal analysis (also known as karyotyping)

These tests are typically bulk billed if you have a Medicare Card.

There are some other tests that may be needed to give your Fertility Specialist a thorough understanding of your reproductive health. These may include:

  • AMH test and ultrasound scan for the female partner
  • Semen analysis for the male partner.

There will be some out-of-pocket costs associated with these depending on which pathology lab is used. There can be quite some variation in pricing, so you may want to phone your local pathology provider to find out their current pricing before having your tests.
